Northvolt Relocates Lithium-Metal Battery Development to Sweden, Cutting 196 Jobs Amid R&D Consolidation Strategy.

Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt has decided to relocate the development of its next-generation lithium-metal battery (LMB) technology from California to its research and development (R&D) campus in Sweden, resulting in nearly 200 job cuts. The decision affects 196 employees. The move is part of a strategy to consolidate the R&D and industrialization of Northvolt’s cell product portfolio into one location. The LMB technology has been developed in San Francisco through Northvolt’s subsidiary Cuberg, which the company took over in 2021. Cuberg employees have been encouraged to apply for open positions matching their skillset across Northvolt.
