New York state has launched 42.5MW of BESS projects, including a 12MW solar carport and 7.5 MW BESS unit at JFK airport. The state aims to achieve this through grid-scale projects of 5MW or over, smaller commercial and industrial (C&I) or community-scale below 5MW, defined by the state as’retail’ energy storage. NineDot Energy, the developer of primarily community scale projects, will deploy two projects of roughly 4.9MW each with a total capacity of 9.8MW and 39.1MWh of energy storage for completion by Winter 2025. Elevate Renewables, the BESS arm of legacy power plant owner Arclight, will also deploy a 15.1MW/60.1 MWh system as part of retiring a gas turbine. The projects are located on Staten Island while Soltage’s are in Queens. The NYCIDA is providing discretionary tax benefits to support more than 254MW BESS in the state, which has previously supported more than 250MW in total. The tax benefits can also be used for EV freight charging, cold storage retrofits and other clean energy applications.
