New York City to build largest battery storage system at retiring gas plant on Staten Island.

Elevate and ArcLight are set to build New York City’s largest battery storage system (BESS) at a retiring gas plant on Staten Island. The BESS will manage supply and demand on the electricity grid and provide ancillary services to maintain grid stability. It will be the first time an existing power facility has been repurposed for battery storage. The project is part of a larger effort to replace the flexible capacity of legacy thermal plants, many of which are located near minority ethnic and low-income groups. New York state bodies have approved six BESS projects totalling 42.5MW. The state has a target of 6GW by 2030.
