The North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) has revealed that electric power transfer capability between transmission planning regions varies widely by location and season across North America. The draft analysis will be finalised and sent to federal regulators as part of an effort to improve grid reliability. It found large disparities in transfer capability across North American, with total import capability varying from negligible to over 90% of peak load. Oregon could import 92% of its peak summer load from California, Washington, and other neighbors, while Northern California could import only 14% of their summer peak and 29% of winter peak load from Northern California. NERC noted that the magnitude of transfer capability is not a measure of energy adequacy, but will evaluate further in an upcoming analysis that will recommend prudent additions based on transmission and resource availability.
