Natural hydrogen, or “white hydrogen”, is extracted directly from subsurface layers without complex conversion processes, making it potentially an economical and efficient alternative to green and blue hydrogen. Green hydrogen is produced from water using renewable electricity, while blue hydrogen is derived from fossil fuels with carbon capture and storage technologies. Both processes are energy-intensive and expensive, with production costs ranging from $6 to $12 per kilogram. However, natural hydrogen can be delivered for less than a dollar per kg due to its extraction-ready state, avoiding electricity-intensive processes. The extraction of natural hydrogen involves drilling operations similar to those used in the oil and gas industry, but there are uncertainties regarding the sustainable generation and storage of hydrogen molecules underground. The growth of the natural hydrogen sector requires favorable regulations and incentives, including significant capital investment to scale up pilot projects and establish commercial operations. Despite its advantages, it is expected to make up only a small portion of future hydrogen supplies.
