Michigan has signed bills into law that aim to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2040, allowing the state’s energy sector to receive US$7.8 billion in new funding. The laws were supported by non-profit organisations and industry, with state officials stating that if the energy demand is met entirely by renewables in 2035, ahead of the targets set out in the new laws, household energy costs would be lowered by $145 and the state’s energy sector would receive $7.7 billion. The state government also plans to install 2.5GW of battery storage capacity by the end of this decade. However, critics have criticised the laws for not including carbon capture and storage facilities that are 90% effective. The new laws could potentially impact the future of Michigan’s energy mix and its ability to meet clean energy targets within the state within the next two decades.
