Massachusetts is expanding its vehicle fleet electrification program with a $5 million infusion from the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, allowing it to serve up to 200 small businesses, nonprofits, and cities and towns served by municipal electric utilities. The money will also allow the program to continue through 2026. This model, pioneered in Massachusetts, is gaining momentum with California launching a similar program in 2023 and New Jersey set to introduce its own version. The move to electric vehicles is crucial for Massachusetts’s strategy for going carbon neutral by 2050. The state’s incentive program provides rebates of $3,500 for eligible electric car purchases, $7,500 ($7,000 for medium-duty electric vehicles), and $90,000 ($90,00 for larger electric trucks). Since 2021, the program has issued 227 rebates to light-duty fleet vehicles, 95 rebates for heavy-duty pickup trucks and seven rebates overall.
