Massachusetts and Rhode Island Announce Historic Offshore Wind Procurement, Boosting Jobs and Regional Economy.

Massachusetts and Rhode Island have announced the largest offshore wind procurement in New England history, selecting 2,878 megawatts (MW) in total, the largest in the region. Massachusetts residents received the majority of the megawatts, representing nearly 20% of the state’s electric demand. Rhode Island selected 200 MW from one project, SouthCoast Wind, representing one-sixth of Rhode Island Energy’s recent solicitation for 1,200 MW of new offshore wind. The projects are expected to create thousands of jobs and investments in the regional economy. The U.S. offshore wind industry has been hit by challenges in recent years, including rising material costs, high interest rates, and supply chain snags. The 2024 Offshore Wind Market Report projects $65 billion in investment in offshore wind projects by 2030.
