Maryland Startup Launches Major Solid-State Battery Factory to Advance Green Technology and Defense Applications

A Maryland startup, Ion Storage Systems, has begun operating one of the largest U.S. factories for solid-state batteries in the country, aiming to boost the adoption of green technologies. The company plans to produce batteries that charge faster and store more power than lithium-ion batteries, which will be used in defense equipment. It received over $3 million in federal funds in fiscal 2023 and has successfully tested its batteries with the Department of Defense. Halle Cheeseman, program director at the Department Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), said solid state batteries represent a significant opportunity to move to the next level of battery technology for various applications.
