Maine Youth Climate Lawsuit Challenges State’s Failure to Implement Electric Vehicle Policies for Emission Reductions

A pending youth climate lawsuit in Maine is being sued by the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF), Sierra Club and Maine Youth Action for failing to adopt electric vehicle policy mandates. The case argues that the Maine Department and Board of Environmental Protection have fallen short on their legal duty to pass rules that will help achieve Maine’s required emissions reductions. The 2019 state law requires Maine to lower its greenhouse gas emissions 45% from 1990 levels by 2030 and 80% by 2050. The lawsuit criticizes regulators for repeatedly ignoring California’s latest electric car and truck standards. A ruling on next steps is pending.
