California-based battery manufacturer Lyten has developed lithium-sulfur batteries for the Chrysler Halcyon Concept car, expected to launch in 2025. The company uses Lyten 3D graphene, a material that eliminates the need for nickel, cobalt or manganese in a battery cell. The batteries offer an energy density between 3000 Wh/kg and 600 Wh/ kg, two times the energy density of batteries made from lithium-ion chemistries. Lyten’s lightweight nature of sulfur reduces the overall weight of the vehicle, enhancing efficiency. The battery manufacturer’s development process reduces the miles from resource extraction to final assembly from 50,000 to 3000. The firm has also developed a Graphene Lab in San Jose, California, and an automated production line that develops 200,000 cells each year.
