Lawmakers are introducing bills to advance the Department of Energy’s quantum research and grid resilience capabilities ahead of the August recess. The legislation would provide an unprecedented $2.5 billion in funding over the next five years for quantum-related DOE programs. The bill is supported by Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill) and Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont). Advocates believe the increasing mix of renewables, energy storage technology and increased demand will create too complex for supercomputers currently used by grid operators.
