Imperial Irrigation District Finalizes Water Conservation Deal with Biden Administration to Protect Lake Mead Through 2026.

The Imperial Irrigation District, the California water district that manages the largest share of Colorado River flows in the nation, has finalized a multiyear conservation agreement with the Biden administration. The deal ensures that more than 228 billion gallons of water will remain in Lake Mead through 2026. The agreement follows an environmental review by the Bureau of Reclamation stating that reducing agricultural runoff from the region would have no significant environmental impacts, even though it causes temporary deaths in the nearby Salton Sea. This agreement is part of emergency planning efforts begun in mid-2022 due to persistent drought in the Colorado River Basin, which has reduced water levels and threatened hydropower facilities at each respective dams.
