Idaho Simple Cycle Plant Undergoes Critical Maintenance to Address Thermal Stresses and Ensure Reliable Operations

The article discusses critical maintenance upgrades at an Idaho simple cycle plant. The high temperatures generated by combustion turbines and on-and-off cycling of these units cause thermal and mechanical stresses within the turbine exhaust duct, duct liners, noise silencers, and support brackets. The maintenance contractor, SVI BREMCO, addressed these issues during a several-week maintenance outage. The project required multiple personnel, including equipment specialists, welders, crane operators, and safety personnel. The failure to address these issues led to the installation of new test ports and repairs of duct/stack metal cracks. Despite the large amount of energy generated in a simple cycle power plant converted to mechanical energy, the exhaust duct and other components are still subject to harsh conditions and require maintenance. The article concludes that regular inspections and maintenance are necessary to keep this equipment in reliable condition.
