Hyundai and Kia Partner with W.L. Gore to Advance Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology for Commercial Vehicles

South Korean automotive giants Hyundai Motor Co., and Kia Corp. have partnered with American materials science leader W.L. Gore & Associates in a strategic partnership to develop the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM), a critical material for hydrogen fuel cells. The partnership aims to enhance the efficiency and durability of next-generation fuel cell technology, paving the way for a cleaner and greener future in transportation and beyond. The PEM, a thin membrane that conducts protons between electrodes, is crucial to the overall performance and longevity of the fuel cell system. The goal of this partnership is to develop an advanced PEM specifically for commercial fuel cells destined for commercial vehicles. This partnership harnesses Hyundai’s extensive experience in fuel cell vehicle development and deployment, while W. L. Gore’s extensive history of pioneering innovative materials solutions for fuel cells, creating a dynamic environment for advancements in PEM technology.
