House Republicans Challenge EPA’s Plans to Expand Hazardous Designations for “Forever Chemicals” Under Superfund Law.

House Republicans are questioning the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about plans to propose a rule that would designate more “forever chemicals” as hazardous substances under the federal Superfund law. The House Energy and Commerce Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Environment, Manufacturing and Critical Materials Subcommittee Chair Buddy Carter have expressed concern over the scope of any new designations. In April, EPA finalized a rule designating two per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as hazardous Substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, which allows the agency to go after chemical polluters and make them to pay for cleanup of contaminated sites.
