Hithium, a Chinese company that produces battery modules and systems for the BESS market, plans to create a 10GWh annual production facility in Mesquite, Texas. The factory will occupy 483,874 square feet and will have a total of 141 manufacturing jobs in five years. The announcement comes amidst efforts by the US to incentivise companies to set up manufacturing of clean energy technology in the US. The incentives include the investment tax credit (ITC) ‘domestic content’ 10% bonus for BESS projects that use a minimum portion of domestically-manufactured content, and a production tax credit that pays US$35 and US$10 per kWh of battery cell and module capacity manufactured domestically. Additional incentives include increased tariffs on battery imports from China and the threat of company-specific action.
