Highland Materials is set to invest in US polysilicon production, using a unique segregation technique that uses metallurgical-grade silicon as its feedstock to create polysilicons. The company plans to start construction next year and reach commercial operation by late 2026. The process was demonstrated in a factory in Canada in 2011-12 by a company whose technology is now incorporated into Highland Materials. The Highland Materials management team includes several former leaders of Silicor Materials, formed by California-based Calisolar’s acquisition of Canadian company 6N Silicon. However, Jenny Chase, solar analyst at BloombergNEF, remains sceptical about the potential for future innovation in the sector as the market shifts towards monocrystalline wafers.
