GM and Honda Launch Joint Venture for Cost-Effective Hydrogen Fuel Cell Production in Michigan

GM and Honda have begun commercial production at their 50-50 joint venture hydrogen fuel cell production facility, Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC (FCSM), in Brownstown, Michigan. This is the first large-scale manufacturing joint venture to build fuel cells. The facility, established in January 2017, provides world-class hydrogen power solutions and has already created 80 jobs. The companies collaborated to reduce costs of development and manufacturing by reducing the use of expensive precious metals, enhancing economies of scale, simplifying auxiliary equipment, and improving cell design. The new hydrogen fuel cells will reportedly be one-third less cost to make than the fuel cell systems used in the 2019 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell vehicle.
