Global Wind Energy Growth Surges, Yet Still Falls Short of 2030 Renewable Capacity Tripling Target, GWEC Reports.

The wind energy industry has been on an exponential growth curve for over a decade, with nearly 200 countries pledging to reduce global warming to 1.5C and achieve net zero energy emissions by 2050. The Global Wind Energy Council’s (GWEC) Global Wind Report 2024 revealed that last year saw the highest number of new onshore wind power installations in history and the second-highest for offshore wind (11 GW). However, this growth still leaves us far short of the tripling target of global renewable energy capacity by 2030. The GWEC expects the world to reach about 3 TW by the end of the decade. However, year-over-year growth in wind energy installations was only over 50%. China was the world’s largest market in 2023, followed by the U.S., Brazil, Germany, and India, accounting for 82% of global new installations.
