Researchers at Georgia Tech have discovered a new factor in perovskite solar cell stability, which may enable the development of more stable, longer-term perovs. The discovery was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Perovskites, a category of photovoltaic materials that can be deposited in extremely thin films, often suffer from rapid efficiency degradation due to an interplay of oxygen and water molecules. The team developed a thin water-repellent layer for the perivskite cells using a material called phenethylammonium iodide (PEAI), which stabilizes the structure and conversion efficiency. However, further research is needed to optimize PEAI layers. The researchers believe finding a way to support thermal stability for PEAIA layers is the next step in their pathway towards making commercially viable Perovsites.
