Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, is planning to install 500 MW of battery energy storage projects, which will provide dispatchable capacity to customers by winter 2026/2027. The projects will be located in four designated locations across Georgia, including 128 MW in Bibb County, 49.5 MW in Lowndes County, 57.5MW in Floyd County, and a 265 MW expansion in Cherokee County. The new projects have been approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission, which demonstrates Georgia Power’s commitment to advancing clean energy initiatives. The project aligns with Georgia Power’s 2023 Integrated Resource Plan Update, which shows its strategy to enhance renewable energy capabilities and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The implementation of these battery storage systems is expected to enhance service reliability and provide a buffer against price fluctuations in the energy market.
