Georgia Power has filed an update to its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) in response to Georgia’s extraordinary economic growth. The company is seeking approval to invest in and deploy new generation resources to support Georgia’s rapidly growing energy needs, including expansion of renewable energy resources, battery energy storage systems (BESS), new and expanded distributed energy resources (DER), demand response programs, and new and existing conventional power plants. If approved, these resources will be used to meet Georgia’s increased energy demand and support the company’s ongoing transformation of its fleet and electric grid. Georgia Power also plans to add approximately 10,000 MW of new renewable resources by 2035, nearly double the 6,000MW projected in the 2022 IRP. The firm expects substantial economic benefits from this growth to offset and balance the cost of investments needed to serve Georgia’s growing energy demands.
