Geologists have discovered a potential for a significant boom in the extraction of naturally occurring hydrogen, “geological hydrogen,” a resource previously overlooked by the US Geological Survey (USGS). This discovery could revolutionize the hydrogen market and provide an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional production methods. The study revealed that over 5 trillion tons of hydrogen is estimated to be stored in underground reservoirs, which could meet global demand for centuries. Most of the hydrogen is probably inaccessible, but even a few percent could meet the entire global demand within centuries. This discovery has sparked excitement among researchers and industry players. Companies like Natural Hydrogen Energy LLC and Koloma are leading exploration and production efforts, with investments from major players like Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures.
