Federal pipeline safety regulators are failing to collect sufficient data to revise hazard estimates for natural gas pipelines, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has urged PHMSA to change the industry-commissioned formula, which underestimates the area where people could be hurt or killed by a rupture. The GAO stated that without this data, it may be difficult to assess the method’s accuracy.
