A coalition of fossil fuel groups has joined a legal battle against EPA’s plans to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector. The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) and 21 allied trade groups are leading the opposition to the regulation, which requires companies to use equipment upgrades and leak detection to reduce emissions. The final rule, which was published in the Federal Register in March, also covers volatile organic compounds. The Western Energy Alliance argues that the methane rule exceeds EPA’s authority.
