US geothermal start-up Fervo Energy has secured a 15-year contract to supply geothermal energy to local utility Southern California Edison (SCE) from its 400-MW Cape Station project in Utah. The deal includes 320 MW, equivalent to the annual power needs of 350,000 homes. This brings the company’s total power purchase agreement to 373 MW, marking the world’s largest geothermal PPA. Fervos uses techniques adapted from the oil and gas industry for geothermal development and its first commercial project will begin in late 2023.
