The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved the Mountain Valley pipeline, a project that will transport up to 2 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily from West Virginia to southern Virginia. This decision comes more than 6 ½ years after FERC approved the project for construction and follows numerous legal challenges. The pipeline’s progress was expedited through a provision in a federal debt ceiling law last year to expedite its completion. The order was signed by Terry Turpin, the director of the commission’s Office of Energy Projects, and was posted online on the same day as a call from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).
