Federal Judge Rules in Favor of NYC in Climate Lawsuit Against Major Oil Companies, Rejecting Industry’s Request.

A federal judge has ruled against the oil industry against New York City’s request for funds to help tackle climate impacts. The ruling is a significant victory for the city, whose 2018 lawsuit seeking compensation for rising tides, intensifying storms and other effects of a warming planet was rejected by a federal bench. The oil industry had requested to transfer the city’s new 2021 lawsuit against Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP and the American Petroleum Institute out of the state court where it was first filed. This decision mirrors nearly a dozen other decisions in the climate liability litigation, which involves nearly 40 city, county, and state governments suing oil companies for their role in warming the planet.
