Lisa Cunningham, architect and co-founder ZeroCarbonMA, and Dr. Wynne Armand, Associate Director at MGH Center for the Environment and Health and Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School, have written a commentary urging for the creation of fossil fuel-free building codes in Massachusetts. Despite research revealing the health risks of burning gas in our homes, out-of-state special interest groups are planning to overturn policies that allow communities to invest in healthy, pollution-free homes. The authors argue that fossil fuel furnaces emit the same toxins as gas stoves, contributing to cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological diseases, complications in pregnancy, and premature death. The article also notes that Massachusetts’s gas system, one of the oldest in the nation, is responsible for substantial gas leaks, resulting in deadly explosions and tree loss. The author concludes that the state legislature must act with urgency to pass legislation to reduce dependence on harmful fossil fuels.
