EPA to Enforce Stricter Air Toxics Regulations on Coal-Fired Power Plants, Overturning Previous Administration’s Decision.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to enforce air toxics regulations on hundreds of coal-fired power plants, overturning a decision by the previous administration that no changes were needed. The draft rule, which was released a year ago, includes closing a loophole for electricity plants that burn particularly high-polluting form of coal known as lignite, tightening limits on particulate matter used as a benchmark for releases of nickel, arsenic, and other metals. The final version of the rule will be signed by EPA Administrator Michael Regan and public release will follow.
