EPA Disputes Utah’s Haze Reduction Plan for Coal Plants Near Canyonlands National Park, Rejects Emission Limits.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is in a disagreement with Utah regulators over the scope of haze reduction requirements for two coal-fired power plants, which are located near Canyonlands National Park and other federal recreation areas. The EPA has tentatively rejected part of a Utah plan to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) at the Hunter and Huntington plants, a major source of haze-forming pollution. Instead of requiring both plants to adopt a pollution control technology known as selective catalytic reduction, Utah opted for tonnage limits so high that they will yield no reductions from current levels.
