DOJ and California AG Sue San Francisco Over Untreated Sewage Spills into Bay, Violating Clean Water Act

The Department of Justice and California Attorney General Rob Bonta have sued San Francisco for failing to prevent billions of gallons of untreated sewage from spilling into the San Francisco Bay and onto beaches each year for the past decade. The lawsuit alleges that San Francisco’s inability to control its sewage system from overflowing, particularly during storms, increases the public’s risk and violates the Clean Water Act. The federal government is seeking millions in penalties and an injunction. Water pollution in San Francisco and other California cities has been a topic of debate under former President Donald Trump, who blamed liberals for waste from homeless encampments and issued an environmental notice of violation in 2019.
