DOE Reduces Gas Stove Regulation, Easing Impact on Market While Aiming to Cut Carbon Emissions by 4 Million Tons.

A Department of Energy (DOE) has reduced a regulation on gas stoves, which is supported by nearly all industry and environmental advocacy. The new rule allows stoves that consume 1,770 thousand British thermal units per year of gas, allowing only 3 percent of the U.S. gas stove market to be impacted. The Department of Enforcement’s final efficiency rule aligns with a compromise proposal by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) and the environmental group Appliance Standards Awareness Project. The regulation is set to take effect in early 2028. Critics, including Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation ranking member Ted Cruz (R-Texas), argue that the Biden administration is engaging in a multifaceted attack on natural gas and popular appliances. The department expects the standards to decrease harmful carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 4 million metric tons cumulatively over 30 years.
