The installation of thousands of residential solar+storage systems by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is underway in Puerto Rico. The Solar Access Program, funded through the Puerto Rico Energy Resilience Fund, aims to incentivize the installation of up to 40,000 systems for low-income households with frequent power outages or with a medical condition or disability that depends on electricity. DOE has been tracking power outage in Puerto Puerto Rico, following a blackout that left over 340,000 customers in the dark during a June heat wave. The agency expects to deploy more than 3,000 residential systems by end of the year. There is no upfront cost, though monthly maintenance payments may be between $10 and $45.
