The US Department of Energy (DOE) has committed up to $1.3bn to develop three transmission lines across six states, aiming to increase the US’ grid capacity by 3.5GW and generate over 13,000 direct and indirect jobs. The investment is part of President Biden’s ‘Investing in America’ initiative, a central component of his economic strategy. The projects aim to enhance the resilience and reliability of the power grid while making affordable and clean electricity more accessible to both households and businesses. The DOE has also revealed the National Transmission Needs Study (Needs Study), which provides valuable insights into areas where both power grid and American communities would benefit significantly from expanded transmission capabilities. The initial projects supported by the Transmission Facilitation Program are Cross-Tie 500kV Transmission Line (Nevada, Utah), Southline Transmission Project (Arizona, New Mexico), and Twin States Clean Energy Link (New Hampshire, Vermont).
