The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced its largest-ever investment in the grid, funding 58 projects across 44 US states and through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The funding will be used to deploy more than 35GW of additional renewable energy capacity and 400 separate microgrids. The Bipartish Infrastructure Law, which includes funding for the first US$3.46 billion awards, aims to make affordable low carbon energy available to as many communities as possible. The DOE also announced that the public money will leverage a further US$8 billion in private investment, with applicants required to put up a share of funding that matches or exceeds their grant award. The selected projects will be carried out by utility companies, electric cooperatives, local communities, and organisations such as the Electric Power Research Institute.
