Democrats Gain Ground in Virginia, Ohio, and New Jersey; Voters Prioritize Clean Energy and Reproductive Rights.

In the first election under a new electoral map, Democrats gained control of both houses of the Virginia legislature and increased the clean energy standard and other policies in Virginia. Voters also approved a state energy fund to provide low interest loans for new generation. While the 2024 election will be pivotal for U.S. action on climate change, largely reproductive rights played a significant role in Democratic success. In Ohio, voters passed a constitutional amendment preserving abortion access by significant margin. In Maine, voters rejected a measure that would create a consumer-owned utility after being outspent 40 to 1. In New Jersey, Democrats expanded control of the New Jersey legislature in an election where all 120 seats were up for grabs.
