Democrat-led states petition EPA to regulate “forever chemicals” in air, seeking federal limits on PFAS emissions.

Three Democrat-led states are urging the EPA to regulate some of the most notorious “forever chemicals” in air, potentially creating the first federal limits on PFAS in air. The environmental department heads in North Carolina, New Mexico and New Jersey have sent a petition to EPA Administrator Michael Regan requesting the agency to begin the process for adding four per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances to the Clean Air Act’s list of hazardous air pollutants. Once listed, EPA would have to establish technology-based standards to limit the concentrations of PFOA, PFOS, GenX and PFNA in its air emissions. However, even if EPA approves the petition, regulations are still years away.
