A federal district court in Maryland has ordered the federal government to protect the critically endangered Rice’s whale and other wildlife from offshore oil and gas drilling. The ruling overturns NOAA Fisheries’ Trump-era assessment, known as a biological opinion, effective Dec. 20. It orders the government to develop a new plan for protecting marine life like Gulf sturgeon and sea turtles. The decision means that the Fisheries Service must comply with the law to implement meaningful safeguards for these rarest marine species.
