Consumers Energy Invests $1 Million to Improve Flint’s Air Quality and Energy Efficiency, Expanding Efforts Statewide.

Consumer Energy has invested over $1 million in helping Flint neighborhoods with poor air quality and energy efficiency challenges. The program was designed in collaboration with environmental justice experts and advocates, including the Michigan Public Service Commission, community and local elected officials, and nonprofit agencies. Efforts included partnering with the City of Flint to bundle upgrades in homes receiving lead-based paint abatement assistance and reducing energy usage and bills. Connecting residents with diagnosed respiratory conditions to energy and home upgrades using healthy building materials to improve air quality. The company plans to continue investment in Flint through 2024 and expand the program to other communities across the state. Consumers Energy recently received the Utility Star of Energy Efficiency Award from the Alliance to Save Energy for its work installing free Nest Thermostats for low-income and ALICE customers in 2022.
