Congress Fails to Act on Self-Driving Car Safety Legislation, Leaving States to Navigate Uncertain Regulations

It has been nearly six years since the first recorded death involving a self-driving car, and Congress has not seriously considered legislation to ensure the safety of autonomous vehicles. This has raised questions about the speed of the introduction of automated driving systems to U.S. roadways. The House Energy and Commerce Committee has been the most active on the issue, having held seven hearings since 2016. However, Republicans and Democrats are far apart on potential legislation.
