In the U.S., there has been a direct correlation between income and the distribution of renewable resources. Equity in energy refers to fairness in the distribution and distribution of energy, and has been revived with the focus of environmental justice at both the federal and state levels. States have seen the benefits of community solar, with 43 states and the District of Columbia having at least one community solar installation, and 22 states having implemented policies that support community solar. In 2023, various community solar legislative measures created large carveouts for LMI subscribers, while in 2023 they were created to ensure that disadvantaged communities have access to clean and sustainable energy. Massachusetts’ growth in community solar is in the top three in the nation, resulting from its Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) Program.
