Coal Plant Retirements Hit Lowest Level Since 2011, Threatening U.S. Climate Goals and Emission Reduction Efforts.

Coal plant retirements are expected to decrease to their lowest level since 2011, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This is a significant obstacle to meeting America’s climate ambitions and means total U.-S. emissions will plateau in 2024 as oil and natural gas demand remain relatively flat. The EIA estimates energy-related emissions will decline only two-tenths of a percent this year, far less than the nearly 7 percent reduction needed for the nearly 8 percent needed to meet America’s Paris climate commitments.
