Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. is moving forward with plans to redevelop part of an idled sheet steel plant in Weirton, West Virginia, and make distribution transformers there. The company plans to invest $100 million in the project, with the state of West Virginia contributing $50 million in a forgivable loan. The goal is to use Cleveland-Cliff’s steel from plants in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana to manufacture transformers, which have been in short supply since the COVID-19 pandemic. The new plant is expected to open by the first half of 2026. This move comes as part of a larger effort to address the shortage of transformers in the US.
