Centrus Energy Opens Ohio Plant, Reviving U.S. Uranium Enrichment and Boosting Nuclear Energy Prospects Amid Criticism.

Nuclear fuel company Centrus Energy has opened the American Centrifuge plant in Ohio, marking the first new uranium enrichment production on U.S. soil in 70 years. The plant, which is the only facility licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to produce high-assay low-enriched uranium, could help tackle climate change, bolster national security and create thousands of union jobs. However, critics argue that the success of this project requires billions in federal dollars. Centrus’ CEO, Daniel Poneman, stated that the technology could help the U.K. recover its “lost nuclear independence”. However, many have high hopes for a nuclear revival, as more than 20 US. companies are developing advanced nuclear reactors, many of which will require HALEU.
