CenterPoint Energy has been criticized for purchasing large mobile generators following Winter Storm Uri in 2021. The company has signed $800 million leases for 15 32-MW generators and five 5-MW ones purchased from Life Cycle Power, which were unused during Hurricane Beryl. The licenses were not cancelled, prompting regulators to suggest subleasing or other options. The controversy is over why no larger generators were used during the storm that hit Houston, which left almost 2.3 million CenterPoint customers without power for over a week. CenterPoint’s executive vice president, Jason Ryan, stated that the Houston service area has unique characteristics that explain the fleet of generation assets acquired. The lease ends in 2029, when new generation developed with incentives from the Texas Energy Fund will start to come online.
