CalPERS Urged to Limit Exxon Mobil Investments Amid Climate Concerns and Recent Board Member Vote Against Company

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) is being urged by environmental groups to limit its investments in Exxon Mobil over its climate strategy, including its recent lawsuit against climate-concerned investors. The call comes after a vote by CalPERS against all 12 of Exxon’s board members last month. Advocates also suggested that CalPPERS should refuse to purchase any new Exxon bonds, which oil and gas companies increasingly use to generate new capital. This move would make CalPER clear that CalPers expects major emitters to take climate change seriously and implement credible strategies to reduce their planet-warming emissions.
