Two legislative proposals seeking to decrease wildfire insurance costs in California have failed to advance this year due to the state Senate’s failure to vote on them before the end of session. One proposal, A.B. 2416, would have urged the Insurance Department to offer more property insurance discounts for wildfire preparedness efforts and another, AB. 2996, would allow state loans to the insurer of last resort in case it exhausted its reserves paying out claims. The bills were subject to tense negotiations between the Assembly and Senate as both houses rushed to vote before a midnight deadline to finalize legislation.
