California’s oil and gas chief David Shabazian retires as state tightens production restrictions and regulations.

David Shabazian, California’s chief oil and gas regulatory agency, is retiring on Sept. 1. He has served as director of California’s Department of Conservation for five years and did not provide a reason for his decision. His departure comes as the department adapts to California’s evolving stance on oil and natural gas, including tightening production restrictions. Shabzian was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to lead the department in 2019.
